Synopsis

Three urban friends hike deep into a mist-shrouded old-growth forest seeking digital detox. Their first night campfire draws a grotesque carved wooden face that floats from the fog and speaks in velvet tones, promising belonging. What begins as curious fascination curdles as trees shift, paths vanish, and each hiker starts rewriting their own memories to match the sculpture's soothing lies. Paranoia fractures their bond as the forest warps time and space around the entity. One friend begins carving wooden replicas of her own face; another forgets his name. The final survivor must choose between fleeing a collapsing reality or surrendering to the comforting wooden god that now feels like home.

The story

Act I

Three friends arrive at a remote trailhead and hike hours into the silent forest, pitching camp beside a black river as twilight falls. They joke about city stress while building a fire; the first tendrils of mist curl around their tents. A low creaking sound precedes the sculpture's silent arrival above the flames.

Act II

The entity speaks, offering peace and permanence. Paths loop back on themselves, phones die, and the friends' personalities begin eroding as they carve wooden masks in their sleep. One attempts escape only to watch the trees close ranks and rewrite his memories of the outside world.

Act III

In a rain-lashed climax the last two confront the sculpture at the heart of the forest. One burns her own mask and flees into the mist; the other stays, face half-carved, whispering welcome as the woods seal shut forever.

Cold open

EXT. ANCIENT FOREST - NIGHT

A thin veil of fog drifts between colossal redwoods. Three headlamps bob along a barely visible trail.

INT. CLEARING - CONTINUOUS

Marcus drops his pack and kicks aside pine needles. Jamal strings a tarp while Lena gathers damp wood.

MARCUS
This is it. Zero bars, zero noise. Perfect.

LENA
(smiling at the mist)
Feels like it's breathing.

They build a fire. Flames crackle. The mist thickens. A low wooden groan echoes. Something pale and carved drifts forward, stopping above the fire. Its hollow eyes reflect orange light.

THE FACE
(velvet, intimate)
Welcome. Stay as long as you like.

The three friends stare, frozen, as the forest seems to lean in closer.

Why now

In an era of constant digital noise and climate anxiety, audiences crave stories that weaponize our longing to disappear into nature while exposing how that very escape can devour identity and agency.
