Synopsis
Vito Rossi, the last uncompromised auteur, is lured out of retirement by a streaming giant promising total creative control—until he learns the film must be shot and projected exclusively in 9:16 vertical format for phones. As production descends into chaos with constant TikTok interruptions and aspect-ratio ultimatums, Rossi's obsession with widescreen grandeur collides with a young influencer DP who sees vertical as the only honest frame left. The set becomes a battleground where traditional crew members rebel while algorithms dictate reshoots, forcing Rossi to confront whether cinema dies in landscape or is reborn in portrait.
The story
Vito Rossi, aging master director, accepts a lucrative deal from Apex Stream to helm his swan-song epic, only to discover the entire production is locked into 9:16 vertical for mobile audiences. His loyal cinematographer walks; a Gen-Z TikTok star is hired in his place, sparking immediate creative clashes on set.
Rossi sabotages early footage by secretly shooting forbidden widescreen inserts, while the studio unleashes real-time audience testing via phone metrics that demand constant vertical reframing. Friendships fracture, leaks go mega-viral, and Rossi descends into paranoid isolation, convinced the format is erasing human emotion itself.
In a final defiant act, Rossi hijacks the premiere, projecting his hidden horizontal cut in a derelict theater as vertical phone footage simultaneously floods the internet; the clash births an unexpected hybrid movement that redefines cinema on the audience's own terms.

Cold open
INT. ABANDONED DRIVE-IN THEATER - NIGHT Rain slicks the cracked lot. A single smartphone on a tripod records the massive blank screen. VITO ROSSI (70s, rumpled coat) stands in the beam of a dying projector, holding a battered 35mm reel. VITO They want nine-sixteen. Nine-sixteen! My whole life—twenty-seven films—wide as the goddamn horizon, and they want me to squeeze it into a toilet paper roll. He hurls the reel; it unspools across wet asphalt. The phone screen glows, live-streaming his breakdown to thousands. Comments flood upward in vertical scroll: "LMAO old man," "VERTICAL IS THE FUTURE SCORSESE SAID." Vito steps closer to the lens, eyes blazing. VITO (CONT'D) Fine. Let’s see what your little rectangle can hold.
