Synopsis

In the frozen woods of upstate New York, the Solstice clan assembles for their annual "Happy Solstice" reunion, a seemingly wholesome tradition masking generations of blood sacrifice to ensure spring's arrival. Eldest daughter Lena, long estranged, arrives skeptical of the rituals but soon discovers the family's survival hinges on offering one member to the ancient forest spirits. As the longest night descends, buried secrets erupt in hallucinatory terror and visceral violence. The celebration spirals from carols and feasting into masked dances and prophetic visions, forcing each relative to confront their complicity in the cycle. Lena must decide whether to break the curse or become its next vessel, as the woods themselves begin to claim their due. By dawn, the survivors face a world forever altered by the solstice's unyielding price.

The story

Act I

Lena returns home for the holiday, reintroducing old wounds among her eccentric relatives while hints of the ritual surface through cryptic toasts and forest omens. Tensions rise as the sun sets on the solstice eve.

Act II

The ceremonies intensify with drugged wine and animal masks, revealing the family's history of sacrifices; paranoia and hallucinations fracture alliances as members begin vanishing into the woods.

Act III

EXT. DEEP WOODS CABIN - NIGHT

Snow falls thick under a black solstice sky. A single lantern glows in the window of a sprawling timber cabin. Inside, the Solstice family sings in eerie unison around a long table laden with evergreen garlands and a roasted stag.

LENa, 28, arrives late, duffel bag over her shoulder. She pauses at the threshold.

ELARA (70s, serene, crowned in holly) opens the door.

ELARA
Happy Solstice, child. The longest night begins.

LENA
Grandma. Still doing the whole song and dance.

ELARA smiles, eyes glittering.

ELARA
The sun demands its due. Come in before the woods claim you.

Lena steps inside. The singing stops. Every face turns. Rowan raises a goblet.

ROWAN
To family. And to the light we feed.

Wind howls. The lantern flickers. A distant drum begins.

Why now

In an era of climate dread and return-to-nature movements, Happy Solstice taps the cultural hunger for ritual meaning while exposing its lethal cost, offering cathartic terror for audiences questioning what we sacrifice to survive the dark.
